Hey friends,
It’s time for another art and music challenge.
The last two proved to be a lot of fun, and the work that came out of them was absolutely stunning.
Many of you are artists and composers with whom I communicate daily and whose work I know very well. It’s been such a thrill to see how the prompts are filtered through your style and techniques. We’ve even seen a few take this as an opportunity to try new experiments.
That’s what it’s all about!
Check out last month’s challenge results:
If you’ve read the previous posts, you’re aware that this was born out of a personal music project I’m making and that I simply wanted to invite you along the journey to play with some of the texts I’m using for inspiration. These have a central theme, which may not be clear with only three examples so far, but will likely become more clear upon the full release (and maybe not). Since my little music project is getting closer to being finished, it may become the natural end of this challenge for a little while.
However, it may only be the end of the current form of the challenge. So far, we’ve only been working with quotes from various media. I have some other ideas that we might try in later challenges…
For now, let’s play with this super happy, uplifting moment (😅) from a great film👇
The Challenge
Make an abstract artwork or music piece (or both, if ambitious) using the following line of text as the primary influence:
“I'm somebody now, Harry. Everybody likes me. Soon, millions of people will see me and they'll all like me.”
This is a quote from the character Sara Goldfarb from the film Requiem for a Dream. A lot can be read from the quote by itself, but for emotional context I recommend watching the scene as well.
Post it on 𝕏 and/or Warpcast any time up until the deadline.
Use #LWArtChallenge, tag me, or DM me so that I can find your work.
Deadline: Thursday, August 15th (end of day for all time zones)
All, or most, works will be featured in this Artletter in a follow-up post. The deadline is only for those who would like their work featured. Otherwise, it is an ongoing challenge.
Feel free to mint your work on any platform, but there is no obligation to mint. I will be participating by writing a piece of music, but will not be minting mine yet because it’s part of a larger personal project that I’ll release in the near future. I will do my best to collect any minted works.
Interpretation Ideas
Here are a few of the infinite ways you can use the line of text to influence your piece.
Literal: Apply a literal interpretation to the imagery invoked by the text.
Emotional: Use the emotional impact the text or individual words have on you.
Aesthetic Sentiment: Interpret the style and attitude you get from the text.
Structural: Look at the grammatical structure or any other aspect regarding the shape of the phrase.
Temporal: Consider the rhythmic patterns in the text, whether spoken aloud or purely visual.
Symbolism: Explore the symbolic meanings the phrase might carry.
Contrast: Consider any contrasts, juxtapositions, dissonance and consonances, tension, or other dynamics you find throughout the phrase.
Sensory Associations: Think about the cognitive and sensory associations that are naturally triggered by the phrase. These might be textures, colors, melodies, harmonies, etc.
etc.
The abstract realm is vast and infinite. A single phrase contains a world of information. I’m excited to see how you take influence from the given phrase for this month’s challenge.
See you on the other side and thank you for participating with me.
